a drama
by Brian Friel
September 25 26 27 28 and October 2 3 4 5
The story is set in Donegal, Ireland, in 1936, just before WW II choked the world. It simply relates the life of a family of five single sisters and the love child of one of them. The action is spare, centering on the visit of their brother home from missionary work in Uganda unalterably changed from the experience, on the loss of job by the bread-winning eldest sister, and the return for the summer of the errant father of the love child, and other daily challenges. The stresses and strains these small events exert on the sisters is eventually climaxed with the dance festival that marks the Feast of Lughnasa (a persistent pagan celebration that challenges the very Catholic foundation of the Irish community). This is a searching, soaring play.

A Christmas Story
11/14/2008 - 11/30/2008
evening
McConnellstown Playhouse
McConnellstown, PA
adapted By Philip Grecian
from the stories of Jean Shepherd
November 14 15 16 and 20 21 22 and 28 29 30
Humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his seemingly impossible dream of getting a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, the official one at Goldblatt’s Department Store. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the tongue stick to a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. Like the movie, “A Christmas Story” has become a theatrical holiday perennial.
