Come to Greenwood Furnace State Park on Saturday, July 22nd and Sunday, July 23rd for Charcoal Burn. Greenwood Furnace State Park and many volunteers will recreate the “lost art” of turning wood into charcoal, just as the furnace colliers did over a century ago.
. The continuous demonstration will begin Saturday morning with preparation of the hearth, stacking of the wood, and covering the pit with leaves and dirt. The lighting off of the pit will take place about 11:00 a.m. The pit will burn continuously into Sunday afternoon, and will end with raking the coal out on Sunday afternoon throughout the burn, “colliers” will be available to talk about the process while tending the pit.
