Historic Huntingdon Trail
Scouts will enjoy their visit to Huntingdon, Budget Travel Magazine's 2009 Coolest Small Town in Pennsylvania!
Explore the heritage of the Coolest Small Town in Pennsylvania!
The Historic Huntingdon Trail begins at Lincoln Caverns, and hikes along the Old Alexandria Pike past Pulpit Rocks and into the village of Smithfield.
From there, there are a lot of different ways to go. Camping reservations can be made at either the Huntingdon County Fairgrounds, or Branch Camp.
We suggest contacting the Huntingdon County Historical Society for a tour of the McMurtrie Mansion and their Walking Tour of Historic Huntingdon. Depending on the season, Scouts may enjoy time at the Isett Community Swimming Pool or Huntingdon Community Center, hiking on the Flagpole Hill Trail System, touring Juniata College, or exploring the shops and eateries of downtown Huntingdon.
If your group is thru-hiking the Scout Out Huntingdon County trail system, we recommend spending a rest day in the Huntingdon area, where it's easy to resupply food and necessities before continuing on the journey.
When your group leaves Huntingdon to head to the Quarrymen Trail, we recommend renting canoes or kayaks to paddle to the Swigart Antique Automobile Museum, and Mapleton Park camping area. See the Juniata River Water Trail Upper Section map for paddling details along these waterways.
Detailed maps and history along the trails can be found in the Scout Out Huntingdon County - 100 Miles of Heritage Guidebook. The book can be purchased at Fort Roberdeau, Indian Caverns, Lincoln Caverns, Huntingdon County Historical Society, Swigart Antique Automobile Museum, East Broad Top Railroad, Broad Top Area Coal Miners Museum, Raystown Reflections Gift Shoppe, and the office of the Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
