Lead Mine Fort Trail
Fort Roberdeau, nicknamed the Lead Mine Fort for the natural resource it protected, is the starting point of the Scout Out Huntingdon County Trails system.
Learn about the life of a Revolutionary War soldier in a replica of the fort that protected a supply of lead ore that was used by the Continental Army to make amunition to fight the British forces.
Scouts can spend the night on the grounds of Fort Roberdeau, and work on merit badges, or just enjoy the beautiful setting of Sinking Valley on nature trails, picnic areas, and more.
After a night at the Lead Mine Fort, Scouts embark on a 14-mile hike or bike ride to the outpost camp of Camp Kanesatake.
The Lead Mine Fort Trail follows minor roadways across relatively flat terrain for most of the route. This hike has a moderate difficulty, primarily due to its length.
Detailed maps and history along the trails can be found in the Scout Out Huntingdon County - 100 Miles of Heritage Guidebook. The book can be purchased at Fort Roberdeau, Indian Caverns, Lincoln Caverns, Huntingdon County Historical Society, Swigart Antique Automobile Museum, East Broad Top Railroad, Broad Top Area Coal Miners Museum, Raystown Reflections Gift Shoppe, and the office of the Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
