Quarrymen Trail
Experience the way that Huntingdon County's rich natural resources were excavated and transported throughout the world along the Quarrymen Trail!
The Quarrymen Trail is part of the Scout Out Huntingdon County - 100 Miles of Heritage trail system. This leg begins at Riverside Park in Mapleton.
Scouts are encouraged to hike north on the Standing Stone Trail (formerly the Link Trail) to the 1,000 Steps Historic Trail.
After hiking the 1,000 Steps, return to Riverside Park and we suggest paddling the Juniata River to Mount Union (a little over 3 miles) in order to avoid hiking along busy Route 22 through Jack's Narrows. See the Juniata River Water Trail Upper Section map for paddling details along these waterways.
In Mount Union explore the historic Downtown area, as well as the Sharaar House. The Mount Union Historical Society has placed interpretive signs throughout the area that will give Scouts a good sampling of the industrial heritage of the community. There are also places to eat, shop, and resupply for the rest of the trip.
There are a few options for camping along this route: the Mount Union Fire Company owns the old Mount Union Airport which can be made available to Scout groups for camping, Agape Farm has a campground, and the East Broad Top Railroad will allow Scouts to camp in its Colgate Grove picnic area just south of Shirleysburg.
Detailed maps and history along the trails can be found in the Scout Out Huntingdon County - 100 Miles of Heritage Guidebook. The book can be purchased at Fort Roberdeau, Indian Caverns, Lincoln Caverns, Huntingdon County Historical Society, Swigart Antique Automobile Museum, East Broad Top Railroad, Broad Top Area Coal Miners Museum, Raystown Reflections Gift Shoppe, and the office of the Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
