Option 1: Epic trails with tails

For the hard core hikers and energetic four legged friends, take on the Thousand Steps, a widely known section of the Standing Stone Trail located between Mapleton and Mount Union. These hand laid historic steps, once used by quarry workers, climb Jack’s Mountain. When you get to the top, you’ll take in a spectacular view of the Allegheny Mountains.

After your stomachs are full, take a trip to Trough Creek State Park. There are many trails to choose from, but if you're traveling with young children, try out the Balanced Rock Trail. This short 0.12 mile hike features a suspension bridge, Rainbow Falls, and the geologic wonder, Balanced Rock.


Before heading home, stop for lunch on the patio at Standing Stone Coffee Company. Their pet friendly patio is the perfect place to enjoy one of their popular menu items like the Montana Mountain Climber!

Option 2: Wag more, walk easy

For those looking for a more relaxing walk or biking trail, the Lower Trail is9-11 Trail - The Lower Trail a 16 mile rail trail just outside the town of Alexandria. This trail runs parallel to the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River, providing a serene atmosphere.


Once you're done, head over to Bluegills Bar & Grill, where the deck and boardwalk are pet friendly! Enjoy some BIG flavors from a small town restaurant. After dinner and before heading to your lodging accommodations, stop at Juniata Brewing Company. Enjoy their outdoor space with a glass of beer from the only microbrewery in Huntingdon County.


Time to check in to one of the most unique lodging options in the region: Airydale Retreat! Pick the one that suits you best—the Towhee (canvas tent), the Cardinal (glamping tent with a slide), or the Dome. They’re all pet friendly!


Once you wake, enjoy a fireside breakfast and cup of coffee, then head to Ridenour and Hawn’s Overlooks. These are two lookout points of Raystown Lake accessed from the same parking lot. Ridenour provides a scenic view of the 225 foot high dam. Take a short walk to Hawn’s and take in the incredibleView of the Raystown Lake Dam from Ridenour Overlook views of Raystown Lake’s unspoiled shoreline. Just a short seven minute drive away, you’ll find the Raystown Dam Overlook, where you can see the 45 foot high, 45 foot wide spillway. Another minute or two up the road takes you to the Dam Pagoda Overlook, where you can walk around the perimeter of the parking lot and enjoy a different scenic view in every direction.


Before heading home, make a pit stop in Downtown Huntingdon and order takeout from one of the many local restaurants. Once you have your meal in hand, take a walk over to Bryan Park to enjoy it! This newly established park features a hand-painted mural by Huntingdon native Matt Speck. 

Option 3: For the fish… I mean, water dogs
